Zoran Dukić: “As Berlioz Said, the Only Thing Which Sounds Better Than One Guitar Is Two Guitars”

Abstract:

This interview with esteemed guitarist Zoran Dukić provides an in-depth exploration of his recent projects, notably the two postponed albums and the Bach-Piazzolla collaboration with GuitarCoop. Dukić sheds light on the challenges faced in recording his forthcoming solo CD, originally intended for Brazil but now relocated to England due to various impediments, including the ongoing global pandemic. The thematic focus of the album centers on the multifaceted nature of “melancholy,” examining its historical connotations, cultural manifestations, and its intersection with nostalgia. Dukić offers insights into the repertoire, encompassing works by John Dowland, Stephen Goss, Piazzolla, Barrios, and Duke Ellington, creating a nuanced exploration of the emotional landscape.

The discussion extends to Dukić’s Bach-Piazzolla album, where he artfully juxtaposes Bach’s serene compositions with Piazzolla’s passionate tangos, creating a captivating emotional journey for both performer and audience. Dukić provides a compelling perspective on the interplay between the human and the divine in this musical odyssey. Additionally, the interview touches upon Dukić’s involvement with the Guitar Foundation of America in 2020, highlighting his participation in various projects, including a tribute to the late Sabrina Vlaškalić, showcasing the guitarist’s commitment to community and artistic collaboration.

Looking ahead, Dukić outlines his upcoming projects, including a collaboration with guitarist Aniello Desiderio, recordings with guitar quartets, and his participation in a recording of Sérgio Assad’s composition “The Walls” with cellist YoYo Ma. The interview provides a comprehensive overview of Dukić’s diverse musical engagements, revealing his dedication to exploring the rich tapestry of classical guitar, collaborating with fellow artists, and contributing to the evolving landscape of contemporary guitar music.
