Chi-chi Nwanoku: “We Can Learn From History, but We Will Be Judged by Our Actions Today”

Abstract:

Chi-chi Nwanoku, acclaimed musician and visionary, draws insightful parallels between her early life as a sprinter and her musical career. Exploring the psychological preparation and fine motor skills shared by both disciplines, Nwanoku reflects on the importance of an optimistic mindset and the ability to harness adrenaline in both sprinting and music performance.

Her journey from the sprinting arena to the concert stage led to the creation of groundbreaking initiatives such as The Chineke! Foundation and The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (OAE). Nwanoku’s visionary outlook inspired her to envision and establish musical ensembles that redefine classical orchestral norms, promoting diversity and inclusivity.

Nwanoku’s passion for historically informed performances, particularly in playing baroque music on period instruments, illuminates the clarity and foundation provided by the bass. Her reflections on gut strings as temperamental yet rewarding entities highlight the intricacies of playing on period instruments. The commitment to authenticity in sound and technique allows her to delve into the raw intentions of composers.

Teaching at the Royal Academy of Music, Nwanoku emphasizes a personalized approach, nurturing students to understand the intricacies of their instruments and fostering a deep connection with the open strings. She challenges traditional vibrato techniques, encouraging students to embrace a nuanced approach that aligns with the musical narrative.

Her dedication to period instruments culminated in a remarkable recording of Dittersdorf and Vanhal concerti with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, showcasing the virtuosity demanded by Viennese tuning. The project exemplifies Nwanoku’s commitment to exploring the historical context of compositions and adapting her playing accordingly.

Nwanoku’s tireless advocacy for diversity and inclusion in classical music is evident in her work with the Chineke! Orchestra. Breaking barriers and challenging stereotypes, she has paved the way for musicians of all backgrounds to contribute to the evolving narrative of classical music. Her vision extends beyond tokenism, urging for genuine allyship and systemic change to create orchestras that mirror the rich tapestry of the communities they serve.

In her ongoing journey, Chi-chi Nwanoku exemplifies not only a masterful musician but also a trailblazer committed to reshaping the classical music landscape, fostering inclusivity, and inspiring the next generation of musicians.
