Sebastian Bohren — “Mozart: Violin Concertos Nos. 3 & 5” (Avie Records, 2021)

Working with the Chaarts Chamber Artists has been, without a doubt, a riveting journey that has shaped not only my musical career but also my understanding of collaboration and perseverance. This collaboration is akin to unwrapping a Christmas present every time, with each performance offering a unique and surprising experience. I hold a profound belief in the power of long-term collaborations, a sentiment rooted in the idea that sustained partnerships yield superior artistic quality. The Chaarts ensemble, being my musical family, has provided numerous opportunities for growth and expression.

As a former member of the Chaarts ensemble, my initial foray into solo performance with the hauntingly beautiful “Vox amoris” by Pēteris Vasks marked a significant turning point in my career. This piece served as my breakout moment in Switzerland, resonating with audiences and establishing a connection that went beyond mere musical collaboration. The fact that we all share the same regional roots fosters a natural and cohesive synergy, creating an environment conducive to artistic exploration and innovation.

However, familiarity also breeds its challenges. Working with a group so intimately connected, akin to family, requires an extra dose of patience. While the majority of our collaborations are incredibly fruitful, the closeness can occasionally present challenges. Knowing the dynamics and anticipating potential hurdles demands an additional level of patience and understanding. Yet, this familiarity and shared background contribute to the unique flavor and depth of our performances.

The journey with the Mozart violin concertos, specifically Concertos 3 and 5, has been particularly noteworthy. The recording process was not without its trials. In our initial attempt, circumstances conspired against us – I fell ill, and the group was still in the process of mastering their parts. Despite my initial preparedness, the recording sounded weak, leaving me dissatisfied. The decision to discard that version and embark on a second recording was not an easy one. However, it was a pivotal moment of growth, teaching me the importance of upholding a high standard of musicianship even in challenging circumstances.

The decision to re-record involved considerable fundraising efforts, a testament to the commitment and dedication of both myself and the ensemble. Recreating the entire recording felt akin to repeating a year in school, a challenging but ultimately enriching experience. While the final recording may not be flawless, the journey was transformative, reinforcing the importance of resilience and determination in the face of artistic challenges.

When revisiting Mozart’s concertos, my intention was not to radically reinterpret them but to infuse them with vitality and panache, capturing the operatic essence of Mozart’s compositions. Striking a delicate balance between a well-rounded, energetic sound and the classicist composure inherent in Mozart’s music became the focal point of our artistic endeavor. The slow movements, in particular, offered a canvas for nuanced expression, allowing us to delve into the emotional depth embedded in Mozart’s creations.

The period of lockdown in 2020 provided an opportunity for extensive reworking of these concertos. Two months of meticulous contemplation on each bar, each phrase, and every nuance culminated in a project that I am immensely proud of. The positive reviews were overwhelmingly gratifying, with the exception of a somewhat antiquated critique from the United States regarding our approach to sound. Nevertheless, the reception affirmed that this recording marked a zenith in my discography, a sentiment echoed by the discerning ears of the press.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the journey through Mozart’s Concertos 3 and 5 with the Chaarts Chamber Artists has been a symphony of challenges and triumphs. The collaborative spirit, born out of shared roots and enduring partnerships, has been the bedrock of this artistic exploration. The decision to re-record, though daunting, exemplifies our commitment to excellence and the unwavering pursuit of musical perfection. As I reflect on this odyssey, I am reminded that artistry is not solely defined by flawless execution but by the resilience to confront obstacles and emerge stronger on the other side. Mozart, with his timeless compositions, continues to be a guiding force, inspiring us to breathe life into his music with unwavering dedication and a profound love for the craft.
