- 1982: Born in Reykjavik, Iceland.
- 1985: Began playing cello, later enrolling at the Reykjavik Music Academy.
- 2000: Moved on to studying Composition and New Media at the Iceland Academy of the Arts and the University of the Arts Berlin, Germany.
- 2006: Released her solo debut album Mount A (12 Tónar), which was remastered and reissued in 2010 (Touch). Composed her first score for the National Theater of Iceland, Sumardagur — which would be followed by King Lear (2010) and Egilssaga (2011).
- 2009: Second solo album, Without Sinking (Touch).
- 2011: Composed her first film score, The Bleeding House (directed by Philip Gelatt).
- 2012: Third solo album, Leyfðu Ljósinu (Touch).
- 2014: Fourth solo album, Saman (Touch).
- 2019: After a few successful film scores, her work on the Chernobyl miniseries made her win a Primetime Emmy Award. Besides, she composed the score for the film Joker (directed by Todd Phillips).
- 2020: Became the first solo female composer to win the Golden Globe Award for Best Score Motion Picture and the first Icelander to win an Oscar for Best Original Score for her work on Joker. The same year she received two BAFTAs (Chernobyl and Joker) and the Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media for Chernobyl.
- 2021: Collaborated with her husband, Sam Slater, on the video game score for Battlefield 2042 (DICE & EA Games). She won her second Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media for Joker.
- 2022: Composed the score for the film TÁR (Todd Field), starring Cate Blanchett and cellist Sophie Kauer.
