Wies de Boevé’s Highlights

  • 1987: Born in Mechelen, Belgium.
  • 2005: Began undergraduate studies at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp, Belgium. First Prize at the Belgian National Music Competition.
  • 2007: Moved to Switzerland, where he completed his bachelor’s and began master’s studies at the Zurich University of the Arts under Duncan McTier. Joined the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO).
  • 2008: Second Prize at the Bass’2008 convention competition held at the Paris Conservatory, France.
  • 2009: First Prize at the Scottish Double Bass Competition held at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, United Kingdom.
  • 2010: Successfully auditioned for the Karajan Academy in Berlin using French bow, and then began learning German bow with Janne Saksala and Esko Laine while playing with the Berlin Philharmonic for two years. First Prize at the Rahn Music Competition in Zurich. First Prize at the Berlin BASS2010 International Double Bass Convention competition, Solo category. Began master’s studies in Solo Performance at the Lucerne School of Music, Switzerland, with Božo Paradžik.
  • 2011: Third Prize at the Markneukirchen International Instrumental Competition, Germany.
  • 2012: Joined the Berlin Opera Academy Orchestra as principal bass.
  • 2014: Began “Konzertexamen” (postgraduate) studies at the Hanns Eisler School of Music Berlin under Matthew McDonald. From this year on, he has coached the double bass section of the EUYO.
  • 2015: Won the German Music Competition — the first double bass player to win in the forty-year history of this competition. Was appointed co-principal double bass of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Munich, Germany.
  • 2016: First Prize at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich. Released his debut solo album, Works by Glière, Bottesini, Jongen, Hauta-aho and Piazzolla (Genuin), with pianist Tomoko Takahashi.
  • 2017: First Prize at the Bottesini International Competition, Italy. He started teaching at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich for two years.
  • 2019: Was appointed lecturer at the Zurich University of the Arts.
  • 2020: Released his second solo album, Via Bottesini — Concerti e pezzi concertanti (Klara), with violinist Yossif Ivanov and the Brussels Philharmonic / Joshua Weilerstein.
  • 2021: Participated in violinist Isabelle Faust’s Stravinsky album (Harmonia Mundi), in the French version of the Histoire du soldat on period instruments.
