- 1979: Born in Voronezh, Russia.
- 1981: Began playing the piano.
- 1990: Won his first competition — the International Bach Competition in Gorzów, Poland.
- 1994: Began jazz piano studies at Boston’s Berklee College of Music, becoming the youngest student ever admitted to the school.
- 1996: Decided to focus on classical music, completing his undergraduate and graduate degrees with Solomon Mikowsky at New York’s Manhattan School of Music, followed by further studies with Dmitri Bashkirov in Madrid, Spain, and Ferenc Rados in Budapest, Hungary.
- 2000: Orchestral debut performing Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 1 (Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, David Zinman).
- 2001: Won the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition.
- 2002: Gilmore Young Artist Award.
- 2005: Named Carnegie Hall’s “Rising Star.”
- 2007: Appointed Professor at the Stuttgart Musik Hochschule.
- 2010: Gilmore Artist Award. Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Career Grant.
- 2015: His world première recording of the 1879 version of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2 on Myrios Classics (Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, James Gaffigan) received an ECHO Klassik Award in the category of Concerto Recording of the Year.
- 2018: Appointed as Professor at the Hanns Eisler Hochschule in Berlin, and at the Kronberg Academy’s Sir András Schiff Performance Programme for Young Artists.
- 2020: His world première recording of Thomas Adès’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra — written especially for him — on Deutsche Grammophon (Boston Symphony Orchestra) received a Grammophone Award in the category of Contemporary, and a Grammy Award nomination in the category of Best Classical Instrumental Solo.
- 2021: His album In Seven Days on Myrios Classics (Tanglewood Music Centre Orchestra, Thomas Adès) received an International Classical Music Award in the category of Contemporary Music. World première of Thomas Larcher’s Piano Concerto — written especially for him and co-commissioned by the Berlin Philharmonic, Czech Philharmonic, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, and Vienna Konzerthaus. Received an honorary Doctorate of Musical Arts degree from the Manhattan School of Music.
