Chad McCullough — “Forward” (Outside in Music, 2020)

Introduction

Embarking on my eighth musical voyage, “Forward” marks a decade-long return to the forefront of my creative endeavors. Released under Outside in Music in 2020, this album stands as a testament to my musical evolution and a heartfelt expression of the vibrant energy that defines the Chicago music scene. In collaboration with a stellar ensemble – pianist Rob Clearfield, bassist Matt Ulery, and drummer Jon Deitemyer – and guided by the insightful production of Ryan Cohan, “Forward” unfolds as a cohesive narrative, transcending the boundaries of individual artistry.

A Decade in Reflection

Since my inaugural release, “Dark Wood, Dark Water,” in 2009, my musical journey has been shaped by a myriad of collaborative projects. From co-leading the Spin Quartet to collaborating with international talents like Bram Weijters and Michal Vanoucek, the past decade has been a tapestry of musical exploration. As a sideman, I’ve contributed to diverse projects, honing my craft and embracing the versatility demanded by each collaboration. “Forward” represents not just a return to solo endeavors but a conscious effort to delve into the depths of my personal experiences and offer a unique perspective on the musical landscapes I’ve encountered.

Chicago: A Sonic Muse

The inspiration for “Forward” emanates from my adopted city, Chicago, a place I’ve called home for the past seven years. The decision to relocate from my native Seattle was motivated by a desire to immerse myself in a thriving and creative music scene. Chicago welcomed me with open arms, and from the very beginning, I felt a sense of belonging. The city’s musical heartbeat resonated with me, and I wasted no time diving into its rich tapestry of sounds.

Collaborative Kinship

The album’s heartbeat lies in the seamless interplay between the rhythm section, a trio of musical virtuosos anchored by the incomparable drummer Jon Deitemyer. Playing alongside Deitemyer is both a challenge and a source of unwavering support. His intuitive playing and deliberate intentionality create a foundation upon which the musical narrative unfolds. Pianist Rob Clearfield, whom I fondly refer to as a “wizard,” adds another layer of brilliance to the ensemble. Despite Clearfield’s recent relocation to Paris, his impact on the project is profound, leaving an indelible mark on the sonic fabric of “Forward.”

Familial Dynamics in Music

Matt Ulery, the bassist, and I share a musical history that extends beyond the confines of this project. Having admired Ulery even before my move to Chicago, the opportunity to collaborate with him has been a personal and artistic highlight. Our musical synergy is palpable, evident in our joint appearances on two of Ulery’s albums and memorable performances, including the Chicago Jazz Festival in 2018. Together with Clearfield and Deitemyer, our collaboration extends beyond the studio, creating a familial dynamic that permeates the very essence of “Forward.”

The Not-So-Secret Weapon: Ryan Cohan

Integral to the realization of “Forward” is the involvement of producer Ryan Cohan, whose contribution elevates the project to new heights. Cohan’s brilliance as a musician and collaborator shines through, adding layers of depth to my compositions. His arrangements and programming create ambient spaces for my trumpet to breathe, fostering a symbiotic relationship between composition and performance. Cohan’s patience and unwavering commitment to the project make him the not-so-secret weapon that defines the sonic landscape of “Forward.”

Conclusion: Looking Back and Moving “Forward”

In hindsight, “Forward” represents more than a musical endeavor; it is a reflection of personal growth and artistic maturation. Chicago, with its pulsating energy, has become an integral part of my musical identity. The collaboration with Clearfield, Ulery, Deitemyer, and Cohan has produced an album that feels like a collective statement, transcending the boundaries of individual contributions. As I take a moment to look back on the decade that preceded “Forward,” I am filled with gratitude for the diverse collaborations and experiences that have shaped my musical narrative. “Forward” is not just an album title but a mantra, encapsulating the spirit of continuous exploration and evolution in my musical journey.
