Eos Guitar Quartet — “El alma de Paco” (Solo Musica, 2021)

Paco de Lucía was not just a musical influence; he was a guiding presence in our lives. Backstage conversations after concerts provided us with glimpses into his projects and allowed us to share our musical endeavors. When our 20+ project emerged, we dared to ask Paco for a composition. While he declined, he suggested something unique – transcribing his tango, “Cositas buenas,” from his own repertoire. Little did we know that this would be the seed for what would become “El alma de Paco.”

Paco’s passing in 2014 hit us profoundly. In the aftermath, the idea of a tribute album took root. We reached out to composers who shared not only our admiration for Paco but also a personal connection with him – Maestro Leo Brouwer, John McLaughlin, and José Antonio Rodríguez. This collaborative effort birthed an album that seeks to capture the very essence of a musical luminary.

A Musical Rendezvous with “Aixa, Fátima y Marién”

One of the standout pieces on the album, “Aixa, Fátima y Marién,” draws inspiration from Federico García Lorca’s “Las morillas de Jaén.” This composition, infused with emotional depth, features a collaboration with flamenco singer Carmen Linares. Our history with Carmen spans two decades, dating back to a project intertwining Manuel de Falla’s “El amor brujo” with folk songs from Lorca’s collection.

Carmen’s voice adds a unique dimension, transforming the instrumental version into a transcendent experience. The fusion of Spanish folk with four guitars and percussion creates a captivating auditory landscape, making “Aixa, Fátima y Marién” a true musical rendezvous.

Crafting “Paquiro”: A Harmonious Fusion

My personal contribution to the album comes in the form of “Paquiro,” paying homage to the song “El café de Chinitas” from Lorca’s collection. In this composition, I sought to blend baroque elements with the characteristic “Spanish” chord progression and flamenco rhythm. The piece unfolds with a minor fugue, supported by the rhythmic pulse of “Soleá por Bulerías,” aiming to create a novel sonic landscape.

Resonating Echoes: Conclusion of a Musical Legacy

“El alma de Paco” is more than an album; it’s a testament to our journey as musicians and the enduring legacy of Paco de Lucía. Our ability to navigate the intricate intersection of classical and flamenco genres reflects a commitment to pushing musical boundaries. In this harmonious fusion of past and present, “El alma de Paco” invites you to embark on a transcendent journey, where the soulful echoes of Paco de Lucía reverberate through each carefully crafted note.

As we reflect on this musical odyssey, it’s clear that the quartet’s mastery lies not just in technical prowess but in the emotional depth and personal connection infused into every piece. “El alma de Paco” stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, capturing the essence of Paco’s spirit through the diverse lenses of accomplished composers and the quartet’s own creative ingenuity.

The album is a tapestry woven with threads of nostalgia, innovation, and cultural richness. “Aixa, Fátima y Marién” emerges as a poignant exploration of Lorca’s folk song, elevated by Carmen Linares’ soul-stirring vocals. The harmonious convergence of four guitars and percussion paints a vivid sonic portrait that transcends time and place.

In “Paquiro,” the fusion of baroque and flamenco elements reveals the quartet’s commitment to pushing boundaries. The meticulous interplay of musical styles, coupled with the rhythmic intricacies, showcases not only technical virtuosity but a deep understanding of the traditions being explored. It’s a testament to the quartet’s ability to navigate the delicate balance between homage and innovation.

As listeners immerse themselves in “El alma de Paco,” they are not merely treated to a collection of compositions but are invited to partake in a sonic journey. The quartet’s commitment to preserving the legacy of Paco de Lucía is evident in the thoughtful selection of pieces and the reverence with which they are interpreted.
